What a fun but busy couple of weeks…. we have had so much learning about penguins, building our shape knowledge, extending our gross motor skills and learning more about the native american culture.
One Song Drumming
On Thursday 19th of May we were very lucky to have Katrina from One song drumming visit us at kinder. Katrina introduced to the children about Native American culture and the significance of the beautiful handmade drums she brought in for the children to play with. The children were provided the opportunity to learn about the culture and the significance of the world (Mother earth) to the Native American people through a combination of storytelling, movement and musical instruments.
The children played the drums to a couple of different songs and learnt how the drums were made. We played the drums around the room and outside saying thank you to the trees, plants and animals. We then all got drummed by Katrina, which felt like a massage. It was an amazing feeling.
Katrina showed us her rain stick and we listened to the sound very closely. We then danced around the room using different kinds of instruments.
At the end of the incursion Katrina told us a story.
All the children seemed to really enjoy learning about a different culture and able to use the different instruments.
We also learnt some new words
O si yo (o see yo)- Hello
S’gi (ski)- Thankyou
Ha wa- you are welcome
Ka dish day (quid ish shay) Until we meet again

Pedro the Penguin Art
At kinder we have been extending our knowledge about Penguins, using play and art experiences is a vital tool to extend the children’s knowledge and skills. The children had the opportunity to create their own Pedro the Penguin by using black paint, cotton wool, googly eyes and a feet and beak template.
The children were asked to paint the penguins head and body, paste cotton wool on the penguins face and body, add eyes and cut out the penguins feet and beak.
This experiences provided the opportunity to extend the children’s knowledge about the penguins body parts, build their fine motor skills, extend their attention span, build their skills to retain information and instructions and follow multiple instructions.
We have created a penguin parade on the wall inside the room, please have a look when you come in to pick your child up.
