Term 4 week 1

What a great start to term 4, the children have settled back nicely and were so excited to see their friends and teachers.

At the end of last term, we started to learn about bees. We had so much fun extending our knowledge about bees through different learning experiences.

  • we read books about bees and the importance of bees
  • we listened to a podcast about bees from the ABC listen imagine this scientific series. (I will add the link)
  • The children were able to make honeycomb prints at the easel by using bubble wrap and drew bees to add to their picture. This led the children to paint beehives.
  • The children painted flowers onto a bee page which extended our knowledge about bees getting nectar and pollen from flowers.
  • We had a bee inquiry table which had the life cycle of the bee resources, dried honeycomb for the children to touch and explore and wet honeycomb (in a container) for the children to look at.

On the last day of term we discussed as group about what we knew about bees after engaging in all the learning experiences and this is what the children said-

  • They can collect nectar- Marley
  • They find the honey with their wings- Poppy F
  • The worker bees pass the nectar over to the queen bee- Charlie
  • They take the pollen out of the flower- Ivie
  • Bees make honey- Corben
  • The bees bring the nectar into the beehive- Tallie
  • Bees sting- Sam
  • They collect pollen- Chet
  • They land on flowers and collect the sweet juice- Logan
  • Bees live in a beehive- Isla
  • Their colours are black and yellow- Pascale
  • The girl bees get the honey for the queen bees- Chet
  • Beekeepers pour honey out- Dali
  • When the flowers grow the bees take it out- Delia
  • The bee man gets the honey out- Harry
  • They get nectar from the flowers- Vivi
  • They fly- Aiden

Continuing on from bees we will be learning more about spring and see where that topic takes us.

Last week the children made spring clay pieces, where they were able to stick beautiful nature items onto the clay and imprints of bugs. We are planning to turn these clay pieces into a special decoration.

The children loved playing with clay and exploring what they could do with it.

Other areas of interest

  • Vet dramatic area
  • Play dough with bugs and nature items
  • Water play with pouring equipment and memory foam
  • Craft table
  • spring and insect puzzles and books
  • Drawing table- the children have been wanting us to print off some colouring pages so to extend this interest we have printed off some numbered coloured colouring sheets.

  • Building with the bamboo construction set
  • The children will have the opportunity to practice writing letters in sand
  • Charlie shared with the group last week his trip to the Great Barrier Reef. As a group we thought it would be a good idea to add photos of the Great Barrier Reef at the easel for the children to use as inspiration.
  • We have the Liberian visiting us on Wednesday
  • The weather is going to be yucky this week so we will be doing physical activity inside, a obstacle course will be set up inside.
