Caring for our ocean
The last couple of weeks we have been learning about caring for our ocean and how important it is to make sure we put our rubbish in the bin so it doesn’t go into our beautiful ocean and the sea animals think it is food.
We read a couple of stories to help the children understand why it is so important to look after our ocean and there were also many learning experiences in the room to extend the children’s knowledge and understanding. The learning experiences that were set up in the room were:
- ocean interest table with sand, shells, blue material, sea animals, rubbish, a book about polluting the beach and photos of sea animals.
- At the easel the children were able to use their prior knowledge, imagination and creativity to paint a picture of the ocean using different shades of blue paint, cellophane, patty pans and sea animal pictures.
- Sea animal interest table with books and sea animals
- The children helped create a polluted and healthy ocean using contact, cellophane, sea animal pictures and rubbish pictures and as a group we chattered about why sea animals think rubbish is food or even a shell.
The beautiful book we listened to was called ‘Duffy’s lucky escape’ which is based on a true story about a turtle eating rubbish and being saved before the rubbish made him very sick. I have attached the link below if you would like to revisit it with your child.
